Chapter 7: Implementing the First Changes
I sat at my desk, flipping through the latest performance report. For the first time in months, the numbers weren’t getting worse.
Absenteeism had leveled off. Turnover was still a concern, but there was a slight decline in call-outs. Productivity hadn’t skyrocketed, but it had stabilized.
It wasn’t a miracle turnaround, but it was something.
A knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts. Lisa, my operations manager, stepped in, a cautious smile on her face.
“Got a minute?” she asked.
“Always.”
She took a seat. “I wanted to share some feedback. A few employees told me they actually used the financial wellness workshop. One of them, Claire, said she figured out how to consolidate her credit card debt. Another started an emergency savings plan.”
That was encouraging. “And the scheduling changes?”
Lisa exhaled. “Mixed, but mostly positive. A few employees have been able to drop their second jobs because they can now get the hours they need here. Others say the flexibility helps with childcare.”
I leaned back in my chair, nodding. “It’s a start.”
She hesitated. “Look, I know this doesn’t fix everything overnight. But morale feels… different. People aren’t as tense. It’s subtle, but I can feel it.”
I could too. The same employees who had been distant and exhausted just weeks ago now lingered in the breakroom a little longer. There were fewer last-minute call-outs. More engagement in meetings.
I wasn’t naïve, this was only the beginning. There was still a lot of work to do.
