Chapter 9: Pushback and Doubts

It had been six months since we started implementing changes. Six months of trial and error, of pushing forward despite skepticism, of fighting for a workplace that didn’t just see employees as numbers but as people.

And today, as I sat in the conference room reviewing the latest reports, I finally saw what I had been waiting for.

Productivity was climbing. Absenteeism was down. Employee engagement had improved, and turnover had slowed significantly.

The financials reflected it, too. The cost of hiring and training replacements had dropped, and operational efficiency had increased. The changes were paying off, literally.

Lisa walked in, holding a report of her own. “Got a minute?”

I gestured to the seat across from me. “Let me guess—more good news?”

She smirked. “Actually, yeah. We ran an anonymous survey last month, and the results just came in. 78% of employees said they feel less financial stress since we implemented the financial wellness program. 65% said schedule flexibility helped them balance their work and home life. And—get this—85% said they want to stay with the company long-term.”

I exhaled, leaning back. That number hit me the hardest. People wanted to stay.

I had spent months worried about who we were going to lose next. But now, instead of running, employees were choosing to stay.

The intercom buzzed. “Mr. Carter, Robert from the board is on the line.”

Lisa raised an eyebrow. “Want me to leave?”

“No,” I said, picking up the call.

Robert’s voice came through the speaker. “I’ve been reviewing the latest reports. It seems your ‘experiment’ is working.”

I could hear the reluctant approval in his tone.

“It was never an experiment, Robert,” I said evenly. “It was an investment.”

He was quiet for a moment. Then, “The board wants you to present at next quarter’s meeting. Show us how this scales.”

I smiled. “Gladly.”

As I hung up, Lisa grinned. “Told you it was working.”

I nodded. For the first time in months, I wasn’t just hoping for change—I was seeing it.

And this was just the beginning.
